Diesel

The first series-produced Common Rail System was marketed by Bosch in 1997. The system derives its name from the high-pressure accumulator (Common Rail) which supplies all the cylinders with fuel.

While other diesel injection systems generate the fuel pressure for each injection separately, the Common Rail System separates pressure generation and injection from one another. The fuel is constantly available at the pressure required for injection.

Design and components

The Common Rail System is modular in design. The right combination of high-pressure pump, injectors, rail and electronic control unit results in systems for all types of vehicle from the smallest passenger cars right up to the heaviest luxury limousine.

Our range of high-pressure pumps covers pressures from 1,100 bar to 2,200 bar. As a cost-favorable version, unit pumps (plug-in pumps) can also be used to generate the high pressure. The injector can be supplied with either solenoid-valve or piezo technology.

The high-pressure rail is selected to match the number of engine cylinders and the pressure level required.

For efficient and clean fuel combustion, the fuel mass injected must always be precisely matched to the air mass entering the engine cylinder.

With the help of mass air flow sensor, the electronic engine control registers the exact air mass entering the combustion chamber. By means of corresponding control interventions it matches exhaust-gas recirculation and the fuel mass injected in such a way that engine running is always economical, clean and powerful.

The turbocharger raises the air pressure and thus increases the air mass in the cylinder.

Exhaust-gas recirculation, which mixes a defined amount of exhaust gas with the air via the exhaust-gas recirculation valve, reduces the share of oxygen in the cylinder. This reduces the combustion temperature so that fewer nitrogen oxides are generated.

The exhaust-gas turbocharger uses the energy of the exhaust gas to compress the aspired air. In this way the engine is supplied with a greater air mass into which a correspondingly larger amount of fuel can be injected. Engine performance and maximum torque – relative to the piston displacement volume – are increased.

Turbocharging is the precondition for downsizing: reducing the piston displacement volume while retaining the same engine performance. This will result in engines with lower fuel consumption and correspondingly reduced CO₂ output.

Bosch develops and manufactures turbochargers within the joint venture Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems.

Glow systems from Bosch start modern diesel engines even faster with less noise and fewer emissions. The new low-voltage systems from Bosch precisely match the heating performance to the requirements of the engine. Even at outside temperatures as low as -28°C (-18°F), they make immediate cold starting possible, similar to the starting characteristics of a gasoline engine. In connection with an optimized injection strategy, glow systems improve the cold running and reduce emissions. They also support the heating up of the particulate filter for regeneration.

Glow systems consist of one sheathed-element glow plug for each engine cylinder, a glow control unit and the associated software package.

Meeting the ever stricter limits on toxic emissions requires not only fuel combustion that is as clean as possible but also exhaust-gas treatment. The nitrogen-oxide emissions of a modern diesel are 96% lower than those of a typical diesel vehicle built in 1990. The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter and the Denoxtronic from Bosch reduce the remaining nitrogen oxides by more than 90 %.

The particulate emissions of a modern diesel fitted with a particulate filter are around 98% lower than those of its 1990 counterpart.

Our developments to reduce emissions as far as possible are extremely efficient: in many big cities, the purified exhaust gases are cleaner than the surrounding air.

Innovative construction: for universal use

The great extent of their functions and performance are convincing features of Start/Stop Starter Motors from Bosch. They are suitable for use in an extremely wide variety of vehicles: with gasoline or diesel engines and with manual or automatic transmission. Due to their compact dimensions, they are as easy to install in the vehicle as a conventional starter motor.

Robust technology: for a vehicle’s entire life

The number of starting operations performed by the starter motor, its lifetime in other words, has been considerably increased for this special application. Greater design strength has enabled the starter motor to survive the more frequent starts throughout the lifetime of the vehicle without suffering damage.

The following measures have been undertaken:

With a technically mature, very effective and at the same time cost-favorable solution: the start/stop starter motor for use in start/stop systems. Suitable for vehicles with manual or automatic transmission, particularly efficient in the “stop-and-go” conditions of dense urban traffic.

Economical driving and clean stops

The operating principle of the start/stop system is as simple as it is efficient: when the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine is automatically switched off. To drive off again, all you need to do is to activate the clutch or, in the case of vehicles with automatic transmission, take your foot off the brake pedal to restart the engine.

An investment that quickly pays for itself

The relatively low extra cost for acquiring such a system is more than outweighed by its enormous savings potential: in the ECE15 measuring cycle, the urban section of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), reductions in fuel consumption and emissions of around 8% were measured. This cycle comprises a trip of 7 km with 12 stops of 15 seconds each. In actual urban traffic, stopping times can be considerably longer and savings – both in terms of fuel consumption and CO₂ output – can be as much as 15%.
